Berkshire Flyer Expansion Begins in Pittsfield

Massachusetts state officials have initiated work on critical rail infrastructure improvements in Pittsfield, breaking ground on a project designed to support the permanent seasonal passenger service for the Berkshire Flyer. The project seeks to boost track capacity and lay the groundwork for expanded West-East Rail service.

Major Upgrades for Rail Infrastructure

This expansion project builds on an agreement between the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and freight carrier CSX. Planned upgrades will enhance tracks in the Pittsfield area, helping to reduce scheduling conflicts between freight and passenger trains along the corridor connecting New York City and Pittsfield through Albany.

Key improvements include the construction of a passing track in Richmond, near the Pittsfield border, and track enhancements at the CSX Pittsfield Yard. MassDOT has allocated $31 million for the Pittsfield Track Capacity Project as part of its Fiscal Year 2027–2031 Capital Investment Plan. In addition, officials are studying the possibility of adding a second passenger platform at Pittsfield Station to further increase operational capacity.

Seasonal Passenger Service Expansion

The Berkshire Flyer first launched as a seasonal weekend passenger rail service linking New York City and Pittsfield via Albany in 2022. The service expanded in the 2026 season, introducing a second round trip to provide more travel options. These infrastructure upgrades aim to improve the reliability and frequency of seasonal passenger service on the route.

State Officials Emphasize Economic and Regional Benefits

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Massachusetts State Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier highlighted the project’s potential impact, stating that improving rail infrastructure enhances the economic health of the region. She acknowledged the collaboration among state leaders, MassDOT, CSX, and the City of Pittsfield, noting that the project builds upon years of planning and advocacy for improved rail service throughout the Berkshires.

Governor Maura Healey also attended the event, underscoring the state's commitment to better rail connections for Western Massachusetts residents and the broader goals of increased mobility and economic development.

Broader Rail Initiatives and Federal Support

The Pittsfield project is part of MassDOT’s Compass Rail network initiative, which includes planning for West-East Rail and supports existing north-south Amtrak service along the Knowledge Corridor. U.S. Rep. Richard Neal recognized the ongoing federal investment in regional rail projects and celebrated progress toward making the Berkshire Flyer a permanent fixture.

Amtrak is conducting its own infrastructure upgrades, backed by a $2 billion Federal Railroad Administration grant under the National Railroad Partnership Program. The funding will go toward purchasing Siemens Airo trainsets, which will feature spacious seating, power outlets, 5G Wi-Fi, bike storage, and updated passenger services. This new rolling stock is intended to enhance travel on Compass Rail corridors in the coming years.

The state is also preparing for the Inland Route, which will provide two daily Amtrak roundtrips connecting Boston, Springfield, and New Haven, with service expected to begin in 2030, further expanding options for rail travelers in the region.

Looking Ahead

The Berkshire Flyer expansion represents a significant step in advancing rail infrastructure and regional connectivity in Massachusetts. By increasing track capacity, reducing train scheduling conflicts, and improving passenger amenities, the Pittsfield project supports MassDOT’s vision for a more accessible and efficient rail network for the state’s residents and visitors alike.
